Deborah Colker Dance Company_ CURA

「I began to realize that I needed to find the cure. The cure for what has no cure. I already knew that I needed to bridge the gap between faith and science, between accepting and fighting, between shutting up and screaming, between waiting and acting.

In early 2018, Stephen Hawking died. From his life story, I understood what the cure for the incurable was. Hawking had suffered from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), an extremely cruel disease. When diagnosed, doctors predicted he might have three more years to live; however,  he lived fifty more years..

I started looking for old stories with Nilton Bonder,  a good rabbi and great storyteller. We read many beautiful things, and ended up being fascinated by one told by the Bahian choreographer Zebrinha. It is a story about Obaluaê, orixá of illness and healing, of rejection and adoption.

The wounds turning into popcorn are too beautiful. After years of fighting against Epidermolysis Bullosa, the disease Theo, the grandson of Colker, has been suffering from since his birth, I realize healing isn’t about the cure of Theo, it's about what Theo's birth did to me.

I end the show with my antidote to cruelty: never lose joy. Thank you for being part of this great party.

▌BIO

Creator, Choreographer and Director | Deborah Colker
It was no mere chance that restlessness and a love of cultural diversity became features of Deborah Colker’s work. Raised in the solitary study of classical piano and the collective excitement of volleyball, the Rio-born choreographer was initiated into contemporary dance in the 1980s by the great Uruguayan dancer Graciela Figueiroa and her group Coringa. In 1994 Colker founded her own dance company, and has gradually become internationally well-known through her brilliant choreography and spectacular works. She has received many awards including a Laurence Olivier Awards for the ballet Mix in 2001 and Prix Benois de la Danse for the choreography of Cão sem plumas (Dog without feathers) in 2018. In 2009, she created OVO, a new show produced by the Cirque du Soleil. In 2016, Colker was the movement director for the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games, which broadcasted to more than 2 billion viewers worldwide, and coordinated more than 3,000 participants in a city wide dance extravaganza.

Deborah Colker Dance Company was founded in 1994, and is going to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024. With thirteen shows in its repertoires, the company remains one of the most awarded and prestigious dance companies in Brazil and in the world. Over the years, the company has already made more than 1,600 presentations, in approximately 65 cities and in 32 countries, reaching more than 3,000,000 people.
